How to Get Rid of Pimples that Hurt

How to Get Rid of Pimples

Millions of people around the world are troubled by pimples every day. The treatment mostly depends on the severity. If you have a usual number of pimples for your age, different benzoyl peroxide-based over-the-counter face cleaning products and tonics should be enough to get rid of pimples. If your condition is more severe however, this will probably require prescription drugs and antibiotic therapy. There is a third way though - time. However, time is your ally only if you're in your teen years (puberty), because it's normal and even expected that you're getting pimples during that time.

On the contrary, you should worry if you AREN'T getting them during puberty. Once your body reaches the end of puberty, your pimples will disappear as fast as they appeared. However, if you're getting more pimples than other people of your age (or if you already went trough puberty), you should take some decisive steps to get rid of this annoying "pest". Pimples are caused by bacteria (usually of Propionibacterium Acne species) which got trapped beneath the surface of the skin, where they cause inflammation.

The bacteria get trapped in the pores by a mix of dead skin cells and a substance called 'sebum' (produced by sebaceous glands) which acts like a glue and clogs the pores. Once the pores are clogged, a newly secreted sebum cannot get out of the pores, which creates a pocket of sebum, which is usually rich in bacteria.

1. Over-the-counter products

All products which contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or triclosan. These products mostly come as different gels, sprays and tonics which should be applied locally after washing your face with warm water. Your face needs to be dry before you're about to apply the product. You can also try with nicotinamide-based products, which have proven to be more effective in treating pimples than antibiotics like clindamycin. Also, give advantage to products enriched with antiseptics like potassium hydroxyquinoline sulfate.

2. Hormonal therapy (works only with women)

Combinations of oestrogen and antiandrogen cyproterone effectively decrease androgenic hormones (better known as Diane 35) which play a major role in pimple creation.

3. Topical retinoids

These products bring order in follicle cell lifecycle and you can get them only with a valid prescription. The retinoids are applied topically and they work by preventing blockages and sebum pockets from forming in the pores of your skin.

4. Oral retinoids

These retinoids work by decreasing the amount of sebum (oil) in your pores, which prevents the bacteria from creating an inflammation in the first place.

5. Antibiotics

They're used in severe cases when over-the-counter products don't help. The most widely used are minocycline, clindamycin and erythromycin. You can take them orally or apply them topically.

There are a number of procedures like laser therapy, phototherapy or dermabrasion which can also help you to get rid of pimples.
